Meet Rapunzel from

North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue!

This 8 month old peruvian girl came into the rescue from a hoarder.  When she arrived, she was active and would eat, but not enough to maintain her weight.  We fed her with critical care for several weeks when it became obvious she was pregnant.  On Thanksgiving day, she delivered two stillborn pups.



She still was not eating as much as she should.  The vet took x-rays and did blood work. He checked her teeth and filed down some small points, but nothing significant.  He found nothing obviously wrong.  He wants to do exploratory surgery and possibly a spay but does not want to risk the surgery until she has gained some more weight.  We are continuing the supplemental feedings and she is beginning to gain weight.



We are asking for contributions to reimburse us for the anesthesia/tooth filing, blood work and x-rays and anything that is left over, if any, will be applied to her future surgery. Our fundraising goal is $365.

Atlanta Metro Guinea Pig Rescue!

The director of AMGPR, Lisa Sharp, writes: 

I went to sex some pigs at an owners house from 2 accidental pregnancies (pet store sold females as males).  While looking at the babies, I noticed one of the mamas having trouble walking.  The owner didn’t have the money to care for her so she asked me to take her as well as the babies.

Eliot is just a baby herself, probably no more than 4 months old at this point.  This means she was impregnated at about 2 months of age…an age when she should have been using all of her nutrients to grow her own body.  Instead she had FOUR babies to grow and then, after delivery, nurse.  This leeched all the calcium and vitamins from her. This along with poor nutrition in her former home, her hips were destroyed, rendering her back legs practically useless.  One is stronger than the other but she still can’t zoom and popcorn like a normal pig her age loves to do. She will use them only when she is startled to get back into her cozy sak.  Even then, she uses one leg more than the other.

Despite the trials she’s gone through during such a short life, she is the SWEETEST little pig.  When I walk in the room she comes out to greet me and begs for attention.  She gets excited when veggies come and eats like a horse!  She also keeps herself very clean.  Her spirit is strong and we are going to work hard to get her body stronger.

Eliot will remain a sanctuary pig in the rescue for her life.  We are going to make every day of her life count and hopefully be better as the years go by.  We will treat aggressively with acupuncture, laser therapy and supplements in her diet.  Our hope is to help her body regrow some tissue and strengthen her bones so there is no further damage.  During the first several months I expect to be at the vets every 7-10 days for acupuncture, maybe stretching that out if we start seeing results.  X-rays will be taken periodically throughout the process to gauge progress.

Monthly expenses (at least over the next 3 months) are expected to be:

Food/hay/veggies: $20

Laundry                 : $ 5

Vet visits               : $120

Xrays                      : $115

Supplements        : $30

Our goal is to raise $362.50, enough for five weeks of Eliot's care. Can you pitch in or forward Eliot's story?

Meet Frankie-Lynn

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue!

Frankie-Lynn was named after Franklin Park. That is where she was discovered in November of last year roaming free under attack by a hawk. Lucky for her a Good Samaritan happened by with her dog. The dog gave chase to the poor hawk and the human managed to catch Frankie-Lynn. Frankie
was the 5th guinea pig to come to us last year found abandoned outside.

After being treated for mites, all seemed well. She was spayed and looking for a happy forever home. Every foster home she was in soon became charmed by this plucky little girl. However, soon became apparent something was wrong. She lost some weight and started drinking a lot of water. She just didn’t thrive. The veterinarians couldn’t find anything wrong with her but she just wasn’t right - a bit listless. We soon decided to try to find a friend for her. Maybe she was just lonely. After a few attempts at pairing with male and female pigs we decided that wasn’t going to work. She liked sharing a divided cage but wanted no part of actually sharing a cage with anyone.

Finally, there was a small clue when one of the volunteers noticed that her urine smelled “off” and wondered if she could have some type of systemic disease. Blood tests would show she had Addison's Disease - a
first for MGPR.

Frankie-Lynn’s ride will end in a sanctuary home here at MGPR. While her medication is not so very costly we will want to be sure she is always going to get the support she needs. MGPR can do that because of you.

OCTOBER'S GUINEA PIG--Donald Trump!

Crazy Cavies

This guinea pig is named Donald Trump and he was abandoned at a shelter that does not house anything but dogs and cats. One of the workers took him and his buddy in and found us and contacted us to take him and find him a new home. He came in with bumblefoot, double ear infections, and both eyes were infected and had corneal abrasions. He was treated with meds for everything and has 90% recovered. He is now blind in the one eye from the corneal abrasion but the other eye healed nicely. He still has moderate bumblefoot on his left front paw but is healing. With all the exams, treatments, and meds we have spent about $500 and that will continue to go up as we keep treating his bumblefoot. He is very sweet and is being housed with his friend and another male piggy.


This Donald Trump isn't a billionaire, and neither are his caretakers! Can you help us reach our goal of $400 for Donald?
