Pootle has problems!

Pootle has a middle ear infection, confirmed by an x-ray. She is a furry skinny who came to the rescue during their Global Exotics seizure in February of 2010.

We are fundraising to help cure her very painful ear infection, and help TX Rustlers recoup some of the costs they have spent treating it.

Pootle is getting the very best of care right now, staying at the rescue director's house.

The antibiotic for Pootle is $45, the x-ray $75, and the check-up is $40, for a total of $160. I'm going to add on another $90 to our goal, for a total of $250, in case her ear infection returns.

We have a very sweet little black crested female named Mahi Mahi who just had surgery yesterday. She came to us pregnant and quite huge. The last week of pregnancy, she morphed into a pancake - very round and she also flattened out vertically too. She started dragging her hind legs behind her at times which we assumed was just because of the extra weight.

She ended up having 5 pups - and all of them were average to large size pups (100-150 grams). The poor girl. She regained use of the legs after she had the pups - but then intermittently drug them behind her again.

Our vet took and x-ray and discovered the poor girl had broken both hips! So yesterday she had surgery to fix both hips - cleaned out the joints, removed the broken femoral heads and sewed her back up. She is on pain meds and eating and pooping so we're optimistic.

Our fundraising goal is $300 for Mahi Mahi, and this will cover only a fraction of the surgery and the initial appointment /x-rays.

"Melvin is 5 YO. His bottom molars and one front molar have to be trimmed every 6 weeks. The cost is $146.00. These molars are mostly black and the roots are shallow. He has an internal abcess attached to his right jawbone. Surgery is not an option so he will have to be on chloramphenicol for the rest of his life to keep the abcess in check. The cost for this compounded medicine is $34.00 a month, for a total of $180.00 a month.

Just so you know, Melvin is one of THE friendliest gpigs I have ever had here. He wants to be cuddled a lot and have the place on his head where the hair meets from both directions gently rubbed. His favorite food is fresh blueberries."

We will be fundraising $270 for 1.5 months of Melvin's Care.

Meet Hope

ARIZONA PIGGIE POO RESCUE!

Hope is one of the mother guinea pigs that came in as part of a group of 4 Moms and 13 babies from the hoarder case featured last month. APPR was generous enough to take in many of these pigs from the overwhelmed CA rescues.

Hope is malnourished, weak, and trying so hard to nurse her pups. She is a beautiful & gentle little Mommy that needs a lot of love & attention.

The cost of care for one of the hoarder's guinea pigs for a month of care, including hay, pellets, fresh fruit & vegetables and housing is about $50, unless we have to go to the Vet - which would be an unknown expense. It is a high possibility that Hope will need veterinary care at some time in the future to assure her survival. Medicines are another expense for mites and lice, which many of the pigs have. In addition, we have transportation needs and since our Rescue does not have a "Company Van", we rely on volunteers to spend time & money on gas and other things like carriers

and various comfort items.

For example, these are the retail prices of some items each pig uses:

Bedding - Softwood: $12

Snuggle Cup: $19

Food dish : $5

C & C cage : $50

Hay : $10

Oxbow Pellets: $12

Fresh Veggies & Fruit: $20

I'm estimating that to house Hope for the healing time needed it will be about $100 in fixed cost and another $42 per month for upkeep, plus any medical/veterinary expenses and volunteer expenses.

As a result, SAGP hopes to raise $352--enough for getting Hope settled initially, and then for six

months of her care.

Atlanta Metro Guinea Pig Rescue!

Wendell (pictured above and in banner) and Albert are two gorgeous guinea pig boys who arrived at AMGPR in late April. They are very sweet, friendly, and super loving. Albert and Wendell are about 3-4 years old and get along together fabulously. They are always at the edge of the cage looking for human interaction. Wendell gives great piggy kisses, and Albert is a snuggle bunny.

They were surrendered by a woman who worked in Atlanta, but lived about an hour away. She took them from a friend who found them dumped at a pet store. While in this woman's home, they lived in a C&C cage and received decent care, but the woman felt she didn't have enough time for them.

These boys are in for quite a treat, as they are being adopted by our very own ... Marsha Weaver! (Marsha recently lost her home and many of her guinea pigs in an Alabama tornado. The month of May was devoted to fundraising for her).

Before being adopted, however, they must be neutered. The cost per neuter is $98.28 each (for a total of 196.56) and then a course of antibiotics of $28.50, for a total of $225.06. I hope we will reach $300, as gas costs are also involved in the transport of these pigs to their forever home.

JUNE'S PIGS OF THE MONTH-Sunflower and Rosie!

Thistle Cavies!

Introducing Sunflower and Rosie. Sunflower is a very special wee piggy, she has what the vet suspects is a very slow growing cancer with multiple little lumps all over her belly area, all a

ttached to each otherwith ‘tendrils’ under the skin.Sunflower also has other problems, she is a heart piggy and needs syringe feeding 3 times daily as she will not eat very much on her own.

Obviously she has a problem with her mouth but it is not dental, no redness etc to be seen but she dribbles a lot. She will chew on a slice of cucumber then leave most of it. Some days she does eat a whole slice and will even tuck into a bit of carrot, she can also eat hay but not very much. Her mouth has been checked several times over the past few months but no spurs, nothing to show for her odd behaviour with food.

Since arriving at the Rescue she has captured our hearts, she is not demanding but just sits anxiously around feed times in case you forget her, with her little front paws propped on the front of her cage watching intently. Initially she would eat her critical care from a bowl but now only syringe feeds will do.

Her cage mate Rosie is completely blind from an eye infection that was not noticed and completely depends on Sunflower for guidance. Rosie also has a permanant head tilt and a heart murmer and just recently she has presented with a lump on her belly that will need to be removed. This is planned for the near future if all goes well with the heart meds. We are hoping that a few weeks course of Fortekor will strengthen her heart enough to allow the op to be done.

Sunflower goes through two big packets of Critical Care a week costing almost £60, her and Rosies heart meds cost £8 50 per week then Rimadyl/ Metacam is a further £2 per week. Rosies op will be in the region of £60- £70 and no doubt Sunflower will need further checkups for her mouth to ensure that nothing shows up that can be cured/helped.

I can assure you all that to meet Sunflower is to fall in love, she is very special and has full confidence that we will take care of all her needs, no one seeing her could ignore the look of belief in her eyes that you will help her. It is very hard to describe this look without putting it into human terms but there is no doubt that she believes this human will do her utmost for her and keep her free from any pain or suffering....and she is right.

I would like to thank you all in advance as I know how generous you all are when it comes to special needs piggies and Sunflower is certainly that, she and Rosie also send their wheeks.

UPDATE: One pig has been found. We are unsure if he or she is alive, or which of Marsha's pigs it is. Marsha herself had to go to the hospital, during the storm she clutched her children so tight to her chest that her breastbone pressed into her heart. Marsha is out of the hospital now. Her daughter is in ICU, but is believed to be stable. She has a hole in her lung.

UPDATE: Emma was the pig found, alive and well!

Now, with good news there is a little bad news. Of the remaining pigs she found today only 3 were survivors. So that makes 4 pigs found alive (this includes Emma).

Of the rats found, 2 had passed and one needs vet care. The other 3 are ok.

Meet Truman Truffles

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue!

Truman is a very special piggy who is incredibly deserving of being this month's featured pig. He was born into the Culpeper Clan, a group of pigs rescued from a hoarder. He is the only one in the group with health issues, that MGPR knows of.

Truman first exhibited symptoms seeming like mites early on, and was treated for mites and with antibiotics prior to being adopted out. He was adopted and returned twice, the first time because the adopter's daughters didn't like to hold him.

Truman was seen by several vets, exhibiting skin issues with very thin fur, and irritable skin. Truman eventually was transferred to his current foster home, and was almost bald and had a very nasty smell. He was eventually diagnosed, via skin biopsy, with "Chronic Hyperplastic Superficial Dermatitis with Perifolliculitis." He has been through many treatments as a result, including holistic treatments.

Since November of 2009, MGPR has spent $1,773.62 on Truman Truffles. This is their most expensive pig ever, since their tracking system began.

His foster mother writes, "If anyone would wonder why so much is being done for one little pig, it's because he is a very special little pig. The moment you hold Truman you understand that he connects and bonds with humans in a way few guinea pigs do. While we still don't have a handle on his condition we have been able to make Truman comfortable."

Our goal for this month, for Truman Truffles, is $375. I know it's high, but I really hope we can make it. MGPR is a great organization and they, and Truman, could really use the help.

Buttercup is still going strong. She still rules her cage with an iron paw! She is always the first one at the food bowl when it’s refilled, but when I restock hay or bring veggies I make sure I put some right in front of where she is so she doesn’t have to work hard for her share.

She is starting to lose some weight so to maintain we are supplementing with Critical Care and she loves it! Most of her hair is gone now (from the hormone imbalance from ovarian cysts) but she is a confident, mature lady who does not care about how she looks!

URGENT--CT CONNECTION IN DIRE NEED!

I received the following information from CT Connection, a rescue already strapped financially from their recent snow cave-in.

They got a pig in the rescue two weeks ago (Tigger) whose medical bills are going to run close to $1,500 if not more. They've already spent $400. He now needs a CT Scan to see if there's a mass behind his eye, as x-rays didn't work. Depending on this scan, he may need his eye removed.

MARCH'S PIGGY OF THE MONTH--Rocky!

Meet Rocky

The Critter Connection!

Rocky is a seven year old neutered male who lives in the sanctuary herd, in an enormous 25'x3' cage. Rocky came to the rescue three years ago. He had been a single piggy all of his life, and on top of this, his family lost interest in him.

Rocky is a real character with a mind of his own! He was adopted out three times to excellent homes with friendly buddies over a one year period. Each time he went to his new home he stopped eating. He was checked out thoroughly by different vets, but no medical issues were found.

After the third time this happened, The Critter Connection decided to keep Rocky in the rescue as a sanctuary pig, so he was neutered. He lives in the sanctuary herd with twelve other old-timers, and is the boss of them all.

Our fundraising goal for Rocky is $360, enough for a three month supply of veggies, pellets, carefresh, and hay.

The Critter Connection is especially in need of this funding, as they are going through a financial crisis. Their garage collapsed from the weight of the snow earlier this year, meaning they lost all of their surplus rescue supplies, bedding, hay, extra cages, and many personal items. The homeowner's insurance covered the personal items, but not the rescue's items. The Critter Connection is working on rebuilding their building and supplies. Any extra help we can offer them during this time is much appreciated.

Meet Miss Scarlet

Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue!

Miss Scarlet is a very special pig going through a hard time. This poor girl has a UTI, calcium sludge, urine scald, and on top of all of that, ovarian cysts.

Miss Scarlet, pictured at left with her sister Miss Piggins, needs a spay, which is an intensive procedure for guinea pigs. It requires an expert vet, which Texas Rustlers is lucky to have.

We are hoping to fundraise for this spay, estimated at $200 (including pain meds and antibiotics), as well as purchase her a cage blanket, costing about $50. The blanket will enable her feetsies to have a soft surface, and aid her urine scald and UTI recovery.

Aside from these requests from the rescue, I would also like to raise an additional $75 in case there are future issues for Miss Scarlet. I would like to establish a vet fund for this dear girl. The director of Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue had a difficult year in 2010, and I think it would be great if we could all take one worry off her plate. Our fundraising goal is $325.

Miss Scarlet was born in August of 2005, and she has been in the rescue with her sister since 2007. They are best friends.

Pablo is a very special little pig whom has already touched many peoples lives in the short time he has been here on this earth. We have determined now that Pablo is blind and deaf. He has no front teeth and will need hand feeding.

Pablo will be cared for by experienced volunteers and will live his lifetime ...as a sanctuary piggy.

Helping All Little Things!

Cocoa is a 4 year old male guinea pig who was turned into the rescue when his owners had to move and couldn't keep him. When he came through our doors his nails had never been cut. They were curling into his feet and causing him much pain. Over time we were able to cut them down and he has become the sweetest pig we have ever met. While waiting for his forever home, he helps the rescue educate children on the proper way to handle and care for guinea pigs at presentations and Expos.

How Can You Help?

We are trying to fundraise $270 for this dear pig, as well a C&C cage. I have extra grids I can send, can anyone provide Coroplast? (Ideally in NJ, so shipping isn't crazy, or a referral to a nearby sign dealer and a donation).

The $270 is broken down as follows: $46 a month for pellets (shared with other pigs), $40 a month for veggies, $50 for a vet visit (if needed), $16 for a month of bedding, $8 a month for Vitamin C.

Atlanta Metro Guinea Pig Rescue!

Buttercup came to the rescue back in April 2010 as a “4-5 yr old”. She came in with her sister who has since passed away. Buttercup has been deemed a sanctuary pig because of her age and potential health issues.

During her vet visit back in April it was determined she is going blind and has several lumpy masses in her abdomen. Because of her age we have decided against surgery. Being a mature lady, she also has bladder control issues and her bedding needs changing quite frequently. She is housed on fleece and towels so laundry is done more often for her cage.

She is eating well so far and loves hanging out with her cage mates, sometimes bossing them around by giving them “the look!” Her favorite place to be is under a Cozy Sak or Cuddle Cup or in a tunnel.

Buttercup’s needs are simple at the time: a warm, dry place to lay down, fresh hay and veggies, a clean bottle of water and gentle snorgles from us!

Meet The Lethals from

North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue!

Here is their story: A healthy pair of guinea pigs was brought to the rescue in May of 2010 with their five babies from three litters. All of the babies were white, had strange looking eyes, pronounced overbites and behaved oddly. I had heard the term "lethal white" and seen some photos on the internet but had never seen examples of this genetic defect in person.

The next day, we got them to the vet and confirmed they all had this condition. Most are blind or have very limited vision. All have abnormal teeth, either deformed or growing improperly. Some have teeth missing completely on the lower jaw.

There were two males: Biscuit, who is now 13 months old and Ivory, who is 8 months old.

There were three females: Maria, and Rosa who are both 8 months old and little China, who passed away shortly after she arrived here at the age of 5 weeks. No matter how much we fed her, she just couldn't seem to metabolize the food. What she lacked in physical strength, she more than made up for with her outgoing personality and big voice.

We can't put these guys up for adoption. They require an investment of time and money to care for them and provide veterinary care to keep the teeth trimmed so they

can eat. They all go to the vet about two/three times a month at a cost of $28 per piggie for the tooth exam and trim. As time goes on, we expect that lab tests and supplemental syringe feedings will be necessary.

As they age, we expect metabolic problems to occur. The normal life span will probably be significantly shortened although we will do everything possible to keep them comfortable and happy as long as they live.

The remaining four are doing fine at the moment, although we are watching Rosa very closely. She is small for her age and while the others are continuing to gain weight, she is just maintaining her weight. We are concerned that she is starting to develop internal problems although she is acting fine otherwise.

Our goal is to fundraise $336--for three vet visits at $28 each for each of the four pigs. Good luck Lethals!

Minerva is a 6 year old female that was born with no eyes. She has been in the rescue since she was 3 weeks old as our mascot and is a sanctuary pig. Not having any sight hasn't slowed her down one bit. She rules the "herd" and is very perticular about who she will allow in her inner circle. She has had a chronic bladder infection and xrays today revealed that her bladder wall has become quite thick. Fortunately there are no bladder stones but she will be on a long course of antibiotics to see if we can't get this straightened out.

Hawk is a 6 year old neutered male that came from the Catskill Game Farm rescue that we did back in October 2006. The horrors that the pigs went through at the farm are unspeakable.

When Hawk first arrived he was petrified of everything and would throw himself at the side of his cage if he heard a loud noise. It took me 6 months to get him to settle down enough that he wouldn't shake when I held him. Because of this it was decided that he would stay in the rescue as a sanctuary pig.

He has been happily living with our older senior females and keeps everyone in line. It is quite amusing to watch him "settle a dispute" between two of the females. He lays down between two pigs that are bickering and looks at each one.

If we reach our goal early ($250), I'll debut another special needs piggy from this rescue :)

AUGUST'S (real) PIGS OF THE MONTH-Spice and Misu!

Both these elderly sanctuary pigs are living out their golden years. Spice (the one pictured at left) is over seven years old, rescued from a school situation years ago. He recently lost his life partner, but we think we may have found a new lady piggy for him to snuggle with.

Spice has always been special needs, as he has deformed front feet which turn in and cause him to walk on the sides of his lower legs.

Misu, over 6 years old, also recently lost her life partner. Misu is a brown and white teddy girl whom we hope will warm up to a male friend.

Spice is neutered and recently underwent a mass removal of a suspicious mass on his jaw, and a second mass on his armpit. He has made an amazing recovery for such an old guy, and we hope he will be able to spend more time in his doting foster home.

Though neither piggy is on medication, as sanctuary pigs they still place a financial strain on the rescue. Not to mention that Wee Companions also has 20 pregnant females in addition to these two!!

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue!

Jujube is a very special guinea pig to MGPR. She came into the rescue with her mother and littermates at a few weeks old. It wasn't long before her foster mom noticed she had very strange behavior and wasn't nice to other pigs. Jujube's behavior grew even stranger as she got older and moved to one foster home, then another. Her foster moms all noticed and remarked on how strange she was. Jujube spent most of her time in her cage in a "trance," standing on her toes and hunched up.

Fortunately for Jujube she had observent foster homes and an excellent vet. During her pre-spay appointment her behavior was discussed (as was the unexpected death of Jujube's mother post-spay) and the vet postponed her spay and ran blood tests.

Jujube has been diagnosed with Portosystemic Shunt Syndrome (PSS), caused by an abnormal blood vessel that allows toxins in blood to bypass the liver and flow back through the body without being cleansed. The vet said the "trance" was actually the pain Jujube was in because of the toxins circulating through her system.

The PSS is being medically managed with twice daily doses of Lactulose, which she will be on for the rest of her life. She has made remarkable progress since being diagnosed--the trances have disappeared and she even puts her head down to sleep, which she had never done before!

Unfortunately, Jujube is still quite strange and does not get along with other pigs, so she probably also has inbreeding problems. She has made tremendous progress since treatment began and now, at almost 7 months old, is a completely different guinea pig than she was so recently.

Jujube hasn't been spayed yet but the vet says the procedure is now possible since she is on the Lactulose. MGPR hasn't decided whether to spay her and whether to make her a sanctuary pig or adopt her to a very special home. Jujube is very charming in her own peculiar way and has captured hearts in all her foster homes.

We are hoping to fundraise enough for four months of her care, totaling $287. This includes $47 for a blood test to determine she is ready for her spay, $110 for the pending spay, and $7.50 per week in regular care (carefresh, veggies, hay and pellets), plus $10 for a six month supply of Lactulose (her medicine).

This month $7.50 is again the magic number, paying for one week of Jujube's care. Feeling generous? Why not donate $10, enough for her medicine for six months!

JUNE'S PIG OF THE MONTH-Honu!

Meet HONU

Cavy Companions!

Honu is an adorable guinea pig who is blind, has some brain damage, and legs so completely atrophied to the point that he cannot bend them at all. Honu is Hawaiian for "Sea Turtle." This little boy is about 4 1/2 years old, but still full of energy, despite his disabilities. Honu was dumped at the Seattle Animal Shelter 3 years ago this month, because "something was wrong with him" and his family didn't want him anymore. He came in alone, but was paired with another guinea pig named Koa.

Honu immediately took to Koa and depends on her greatly. Honu MUST know where Koa is in the cage in order to function. Mary, Cavy Companions director, worries about how long Honu will survive if Koa were to pass first.

They now live with two other guinea pigs. Honu largely keeps to himself because he can barely move around. Mary puts the pellet bowl immediately beside his water bottle so he doesn't have to move from one side of the cage to another. She picks him up every night and puts him by the hay so he doesn't have to move around or be without. Occasionally, she finds him with his face in a corner of the cage because it's safer, as there are two sides he can sense.

His head bobs up, down and from side to side when there is food coming, and he sleeps with his legs stiff in front of him because they can't bend anymore.

He is a truly adorable pig who has been through far too much, but is now a very lucky boy in Mary's care. Any donations toward his upkeep would be greatly appreciated, as Mary independently cares for 28 guinea pigs and can find the rescue under financial strain at times.

We are hoping to fundraise $246: enough to recoup the cost of the two exams that determined Honu's medical conditions ($96), and $150 to provide five months worth of veggies, Carefresh, and pellets ($7.50 per week).

This month the magic number to donate is $7.50, or an even $15!

Doofy gets some snuggles

Deputy Doofy was dumped at the San Gabriel (L.A.) shelter with about fifteen other pigs in July of 2003. He was around six weeks old. The conditions at that shelter were very bad, the pigs were in filthy cages, literally sitting outside in their own waste. Most of the pigs came down with enteritis and with medication all but one survived.

We had a hard time getting them adopted because, sadly, they were looked upon by adopters as not as pretty as some of our other pigs. They were almost all brown, smooth haired, kind of 'plain' but with plenty of personality. Deputy Doofy was actually adopted twice then returned. We paired him up with Natasha in 2005 -- she was a pretty white sow who was left on one of our doorsteps in a box. The two were adopted together but sadly, returned again. Once again they were adopted and it looked like it was going to last, but early this year they were returned to OCCH, now senior pigs and unlikely to be adopted again.

We realized right away that Natasha was ill. She seemed to be getting bloated. The vet felt a mass in her abdomen and, when we could not keep her from bloating, we had the vet do emergency surgery. Sadly, Natasha died only a couple hours after surgery and poor Doofy was alone. But not for long. He now lives with Itchy, another 7 year old boar who has been in our rescue since 2003.

Doofy is now considered part of our sanctuary. We don't know what he has been through for sure, but he has some health problems we are still trying to figure out. His eyes water continuously despite several courses of antibiotic ointments and oral antibiotics. He is very arthritic and has some twisted toes as well as a very painful back. He drinks a lot of water and can't keep his weight up without hand feeding. You can tell by looking at him that he doesn't feel well. He also seems to have bladder sludge, and that can be painful.

Doofy could really use some tests to determine if there is some medication that will help him. An x ray and urinalysis could tell us a lot about him and might just solve the mystery. We would love to be able to give Doofy the TLC he deserves in his golden years. He is a really sweet boy who seems very sad and uncomfortable. It would cost about $250 to get Doofy an exam, urinalysis and x ray.

April's Pig of the Month-Clarence!

Meet Clarence

Small Angels!

Clarence is an absolutely adorable piggy. He came into Small Angels in April of 2009 as part of a large group taken to a local animal shelter when their owner was moving away.

He was in a poor state on arrival, thin, weak, and dehydrated. He was thought to be an older piggie, due to his conformation, but the lady piggies who came in with him were all pregnant and in due course gave birth to babies who bore a striking resemblance to him (!)

Clarence suffered from chronic diarrhea and on and off he also had a runny eye and nostril for most of the summer. After being neutered he remained in the rescue for an assortment of treatments. In the Autumn he was found to have an abscess under his jaw and the prognosis was poor, so we had to decide if he was a good candidate for surgery or not (the alternative being euthanasia). It was a difficult decision, but throughout all these months he had remained perky and lively, in spite of still being somewhat thin. So we decided to give surgery a go.

Clarence tolerated a long course of antibiotics and then had surgery to drain the abscess and remove a rotton tooth. It was successful! Since then, he has remained on anti-biotics twice weekly and needed probiotics to address the resulting diarrhea.

Clarence is a delightful little guy, amazing us with his upbeat character and endearing manner. Recently he has gained a little weight and he gets very excited about having his veggies, hopping up on his wooden house to wait for them. Clarence also still likes to chat to the ladies :)

We are looking for a Twilight home for him within about ten miles of Mt. Airy, MD. This needs to be somewhere where he will be loved and appreciated; preferably with a lady piggie or two for company. We will continue to monitor his health and provide the necessary veterinary care for the remainder of his life.

Clarence is on three medications: Zenequin ($1.96 a week), Benebac ($4.32 per week), and Vitamin C ($0.34 per week). His total medications are just $6.62 per week! For members who normally donate $5 a month, I really encourage you to donate $6.62 (if you can), so you can pay for a whole week of Clarence's care!

Meet Ziggy and Brodie

This year's two pigs are Brodie (11 months) and Ziggy (around two years). You will remember Brodie from last year. He lived with Josh after Yetti died. We could not find a piggy who would accept him after Josh went to the Rainbow Bridge, and we tried many, so we decided to castrate and find him a wife.

Ziggy arrived in terrible condition, mites, lice, very thin, and terrified of all piggies due to being mercilessly bullied by her cage mates. She coud not eat for sheer fear she would be bitten, she was separated from the other piggies and enjoyed life by herself for a while being syringe fed to gain much needed weight. She was only 1 lb 3 ounces. We also discovered Ziggy had a heart problem so she is now on Fortekor and still being syringe fed to ensure she continues to gain, she is now at 1 lb 12 ounces!

We paired her with Brodie and all was well for two days. Then we noticed a small abscess on Brodie's nose, cleaned it up, but by night time he had a huge abscess below his ear. At that point they were separated, Ziggy with the resident girls and Brodie in a hospital cage.

For three weeks now we have battled with Brodie's abscesses, so far the count is 16. He has some sort of infection that is being carried around in his blood and is causing abscesses. He has had two vet visits so far costing #178.35 to lance and clean/flush out the abscesses. Two more are coming up and they will need to be lanced in the very near future.

He is on Baytil and pain relief, syringe feeds daily just to keep him topped up, as well as huge doses of probiotics. We have not managed to definitely isolate the exact bacteria causing the infection but it is thought to be pastuerella. We do not know if we will win the battle for him and have been warned it may break out again at any time in the future.

He is happy, lively, and a complete star when it comes to all the flushing, cleanimg etc. of his wounds. He sits with his head tilted up and we get on with the job, only occasionally does he flinch if we touch a particularly sensitive spot.

So meanwhile these two lonely piggies have to be separated and there is no doubt that Brodie misses Ziggy. We do all we can to keep him happy but we are not piggies! Plus there is the zoonosis side and we have been well warned about this, wearing masks, gloves, etc. We have to keep to very strict hygeine and the big pads for him to sit on while we clean him up cost $14.95 for 12 and we go through 2 a day.

Costs for Brodie per week are: Baytril #9.00, Antibiotic flushing solution #6.00, Chlorahexadine #3.15, Sundries (cotton buds/balls, syringes, probiotics) #3, Critical Care #14.95, Pain Relief #3.00.

Costs for Ziggy per week: Fortekor: #4.90, Critical Care: #14.95.

Total cost per week: #58.95 or $88.79. Total fundraising goal (a three week supply): #176.85 or $266.37

We hope that Ziggy and Brodie can live together again but Brodie does not have a quick fix illness. But as long as he is happy, lively and enjoying life we will keep him on with meds, syringe feedings, and flushings, and hope that there is a happy ending for both of these loveable pigs.

Their story:

The lab piggies were from the University of Arlington, we had originally been conntacted by them to rescue 31 in 2008 after they had finished their trials, they told us they were done with guinea pigs as they did not cooperate well. Unfortunately less than a year later we were called again to take 18 more.This time they were kept as pairs in those tiny tubs that you see them pictured in.We rescued 14 girls and 4 boys, these were not quite as shy as the first lot and took to eating veggies a lot quicker.

Due to their looks people don't even stop to consider them for adoption so we anticipate their stay at the rescue to be long, maybe even a lifetime. We would love to be able to raise enough money to get the 4 boys neutered ($65 each)

Pinball was originally advertised on Craigslist as having a malocllussion (teeth) problem. ACR&S contacted the poster and offered a vet referral, but the poster was unable to afford the treatment. She wanted to sign over Pinball to the rescue. The rescue agreed, because "while tooth problems can initially be costly to treat, usually they can be controlled once they get back to zero (so to speak)."

When Pinball arrived at the rescue, he looked close to death. He obviously had a tooth problem (as "he was drooling uncontrollably and had wads of spit caked against his left cheek") , but his eye was in trouble too. He also had a head tilt and cried when his ears were touched (for those who are lucky enough to not have heard a guinea pig cry, it's one of the worst sounds imaginable).

The eye infection, which the surrenderer had tried to treat, had spread to the ear canals, and the ear infection caused the head tilt. The pain from the infection made Pinball stop eating, and once his teeth overgrew he was unable to all together. "The eye continued to worsen. The infection robbed him of most of his vision, and all of his hearing."

"In short, Pinball...is blind, deaf, has bad teeth, a head tilt, and can't walk straight because of a simple eye infection that was likely started by an innocuous hay poke."

Pinball's first visit to the vet showed extensive bone loss, meaning he had been having problems eating for a long time (the problem was also likely exacerbated by a poor quality pellet). The vet trimmed the points on his molers (some even larger than a pencil lead). The eye problems had begun by an injury, which left improperly treated, became an infection. The doctor treated the eye (for more details, visit the original blog post) but it never got entirely better.

Pinball may have to lose the eye, which is one of the things we are fundraising for (rest assured, if the operation is not neccessary, Pinball has tons of other medical demands!) . "Had the initial problem been addressed when it occurred, Pinball likely would have had to endure 2-3 weeks of eyedrops and a recheck and would be perfectly healthy right now. Instead, over a year, he developed an infection that literally has made him special needs for the rest of his life."

Pinball has found some joy in life. He loves parsley, cuddle cups, and his critical care. He is a fighter for his health, and an overall wonderful pig.

We're hoping to fundraise $250 for Pinball's care: $150 dollars for the potential eye removal (if not needed, it can fund two teeth trims), $60 for antibiotics (oral and optical), and $40 for two months of pain killers.

"Big Boy is one of the most awesome guinea pigs we've ever had come in to the rescue. He is very sociable and has gotten even more so since coming here. He absolutely loves a good chin rub. When he sees my son (the best chin-rubber) walk into the room, he immediately starts walking out to meet him, rumble-strutting and purring the whole way. He keeps up the purring as long as you want to rub his chin. He is such a happy guy and we're so lucky to have him.

"Big Boy hasn't had it too easy though. In March of this year he was dropped off in the night-drop box at a local shelter with no information about him. The vets checked him over and decided he had scurvy, urine/fecal incompetence, urine scald, impaction and and a lump on his chin they couldn't check because he was too wiggly. They recommended that if rescue could not be found that day, that he should be euthanized.

"On 3/18/09 we pulled him and took him to our vet where it was determined he had Cervical Lymphadentitis (CL). This was treated successfully with antibiotics. Our vet said he did not have scurvy. On April 7th we found some more lumps under his chin, armpits, and the inguinal region. Our vet said to bring him in immediately.

"Big Boy was found to have lymphoma, which does not have a good prognosis. Most guinea pigs die within a couple days of diagnosis. Most people opt not to try chemo, instead just keeping the piggy as comfortable as possible. Our vet thought it was worth a try, and wanted to try a higher dose of chemo than he tried on other patients. We were a little leery, but if could be treated without adverse side effects, it would be worth the effort. The protocol included L-Sparginase injected every three weeks and Prednisone twice a day (orally).

"On 4/14/09, at Big Boy's one week post-chemo check-up, we were quite excited to find Big Boy's cysts smaller! We were even more excited to find out on May 21st that his lumps were no longer palpable! And Big Boy was feeling great-at 1300 grams, we even caught him running a little and doing a couple popcorns!

"We are now more than seven months post-diagnosis and are crossing our fingers that things keep going as well. His chemo has now been drawn out to every four weeks instead of three weeks. We have seen no adverse effects, in fact, he looks happier and healther than when he first came in. His weight and appetite have held steady--he can put away a good pile of hay in no time.

"He has picked up a girlfriend, a cute red and white Peruvian named Rosie. She was depressed over losing her mate when she came to us and would not eat. We tried lots of things and finally decided to introduce her to Big Boy. He immediately perked her up and she started eating and recovering. They have been very close since then (as close as you can be with a divider down the middle of the cage). They often are nuzzling through the grid. Big Boy and Rosie even recently raised a foster pup who lost his mother at birth.

"So that's Big Boy's story to date. He's a special piggy."

Our goal is to raise $280, enough for four months of medicine. The Prednisone is $32 a month, and the chemo (L-Sparginase) is $38 a month, totalling $70.

NOVEMBER'S GUINEA PIG OF THE MONTH-Cane and Tater!

Cane and Tater are two male guinea pigs, approximately 3 to 4 years old that have a sad story to tell. When whoever owned the boys no longer wanted to take care of them they were turned loose on a vacant lot in the city to fend for themselves. Why people do this is beyond our understanding. There is no way guinea pigs or any other animals can survive when left to their own.

Both boys were severely vitamin C deficient when they arrived at the rescue. So much so that we thought that Cane (on the left) wasn't going to survive. He was extremely lethargic, was reluctant to move, had significant hair loss, etc. He was immediately given fluids and an injection of vitamin C.

The next morning there was a slight improvement so we gave him more vitamin C, fluids, and critical care. By that evening he began to eat on his own and was much brighter. The rescue began treatment of baytril and metacam, also treated for mites and continued with vitamin C supplement for both.

Both boys had bumblefoot, an infection in the pads of all 4 of their feet. Cane and Tater are receiving the medical care that they so desperately needed, good food, and tons of TLC. They will not be available for adoption until they have totally recovered.

The infection has been slow to clear out and we will be doing xrays to make sure the infection hasn't spread further into their feet.

We will be fundraising for one month of care for both of the boys, $125 each, $250 total. These costs include Baytril, Metacam, their daily vitamin C supplement, and x-rays.

Bandit and Silverado came to Wee Companions through a series of fortunate events. It all started with an ad that had a picture of two sad looking guineas in a terrible living situation. A wonderful woman from LA took one look at the picture and declared that she had to rescue these boys. "Bandit looks just like one of my own guineas, so I just couldn't get them off my mind." So, she quickly began to ask if there were any rescues that would be willing to help her in this. Wee Companions of San Diego gladly stepped up to the challenge and agreed to help with whatever these boys might need.

She, wisely, took a fellow guinea friend with her, and off they went to save the boys. "There was nothing in their cage to stand on except wire and nothing to eat but an old carrot and cheapy cat food! Plus, they were outside in the heat and smog! We wouldn't have left them there for anything!" But they were free! And yet that is only the beginning.

Once Bandit and Silverado were out of the cage, they went with their rescuers to spend the night before coming down to Wee Companions. The ladies had a long vigil that night, watching over the boys, "Silverado just kept falling asleep, as if he was crashing! So, we actually called him Crash to start with! We were so concerned that he wouldn't make the night." But he did! And he and Bandit took the long road down in San Diego, where they met up with Wee Companions and a volunteer named Julie.

"I didn't know what to expect. Those boys were such a mess even after everything the ladies had done for them." After close observation, one could see that their digestion tracts were severely hampered. Bandit had fleas, mites, and fungus, broken toes, and trouble eating. Silverado had mites, fungus, and was very weak and thin. But they loved each other and Bandit kept crawling over to sit over Silverado's little body to help keep him warm.

Thus began the long road of true recovery for these special boys. But, the story doesn't end there either. The boys began to heal and gain strength. Bandit's hair began to grow out and Silverado seemed to have more strength, but other things seemed to be amiss. "I came into the sick room one morning to pass out veggies. As I rounded the corner, I happened to drop the vegetable bag and make a huge ruckus! Bandit ran for his life, but Silverado just sat there, as if nothing had happened. When I walked up clapping my hands he still didn't move. Even when I reached my hand out toward him, he didn't respond. Only after I touched him, did he move, and boy did he jump!" observed Julie.

Sadly, not only was Silverado deaf, he was also blind. After closer inspection and conferring with a variety of guinea experts, it was realized that Silverado had more medical issues, and is considered a very rare Lethal white guinea. A rep. from OOCH describes a Lethal white as, "Having no pigment in their skin. They are missing a specific gene, so that makes them much weaker and smaller than other guinea pig. Also, Lethal whites are often blind, deaf, and have continued dental and health issues the rest of their lives."

Julie smiles as she remembers, "Poor Silverado. With all of the needed blood work and X-rays we didn't know how we were/are going to cover all of his expenses. Now, they have special housing for Bandit's sore feet and so that Silverado doesn't get lost. But, it's okay because they are so worth it!"

Now, Bandit the long haired peruvian and Silverado his Lethal white side kick really did ride into the west and hopefully, it will be a long, glorious ride into a beautiful Californina sunset.

Meet Tagg

from Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue!

Tagg is an adorable, handsome, beautiful, indescribable! guinea guy. He is currently suffering from Myxosarcoma tumors on his nose (painful, but not cancerous). They have to be surgically removed every few months, causing both Tagg and the rescue great distress. Financial contributions toward Tagg will be greatly appreciated.

His story is told in two parts:

From Tagg's first and final foster mom: "Carroll County called us to come get guinea pigs. They already had too many rabbits and pigs then York PA contacted them to take pigs they were going to have to euth. So there was no room at York. Then there was no room at Carroll. Then we were called and we had no room for boys. I went and picked up the females and left Tagg behind. All day I couldn't get Tagg off my mind. The next Morning I was at Carroll before they opened. He had cast his spell and I had to have him so I set up an emergency cage. Having said that it certainly was never on my mind that Tagg would end up moving around a bit within MGPR and then finding his way back to me to spend the rest of his life.Tagg is shy of humans but VERY interested in EVERYTHING going on around him. He is always looking at everything and has the most adorable way of moving his head. He seems more like an animated toy than an animal. He prances and scampers rather than walks. When you pick him up he kind of melts in your arms in a rubbery kind of way and he smells wonderful."

From Tagg's second foster mom: "He is a sweetie pie! He loves his floor time. Even with the ugly "thing" on his face, he just got on with life as if nothing were wrong. He is a popcorning fool. He loves other pigs and is always trying to see my sick pig Ernie. He is a little shy with people. He eats his Vit C tab every day. He climbed my stairs once. He took his meds no problem until the end, when he decided enough was enough and refused the last couple of days, but I "persuaded" him to take them. I have never heard him chatter his teeth and he purrs every time he sees pigs."

North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue!

"Dunkin came via owner surrender to our local rescue group. This male is approximately 2 ½ yrs old and super sweet. Because he seemed to have labored breathing, we took him to the vet only to find out he had previous internal injuries and some type of heart condition. This was complicated by pneumonia.

His lungs improve everyday with a course of antibiotics, but his heart will require medication for the rest of his life. He loves to eat- everything! – and is a super friendly little guy. My kids insist he resembles a ground hog! He has a great disposition and his condition does not seem to keep him from doing what guinea pigs do- squeak and eat!

He will require monthly vet visits as well as 2 prescriptions 3X/day for the heart and lung condition. He will need follow-up x-rays to see if the medicines are helping with the fluid around his heart. So far, his medical cost since late May exceed $358 in vet visits, x-rays and prescriptions. Monthly meds will be approx $80 as well as a monthly check up with the vet costing approx $40.Follow-up x-rays will be needed eventually at the cost of $124."

Our goal is to fundraise enough for two months of meds and two vet visits, reaching a total of $240. Will you help us with a $1 or larger donation today?

Cavy Companions!

Barack is an adorable, presidential pig! He is five to six years old and came to this small, home-based rescue from a local shelter. He had no where else to go. Barack was severely impacted, was missing a front tooth, had overgrown bottom front teeth, and had bumblefoot on all four of his feet-his bumblefoot will never fully heal. Barack was starving because his overgrown molars covered his tongue so he couldn't eat. His nails were growing upward, his fur was matted with feces, and he smelled absolutely horrible.

Barack will need to be cleaned out every day for the rest of his life, and he gets medication daily for the pain in his feet. He must be on fleece 24/7 because of his foot pain. The poor guy has a fused ankle joint, and as a result he will never be able to use this foot normally.

A direct quote from the rescue: "Despite the suffering and neglect he had been through, he is one of the sweetest guinea pigs I've ever taken in. Because no one paid attention to him, he craves being held and will close his eyes while I stroke him. He is very gentle and needs a lot of my time to help him trust that he will be taken care of. It's a miracle that he survived this long."

We are hoping to raise $239 for Barack-enough for one molar and incisor trimming.

Wisconsin Guinea Pig Rescue!

From the Rescue:

Poor Bunny almost died from fright. This little girl had so little contact with humans at the start of her life that she was terrified of people and was nearly euthanized by the shelter for being too feral. No one thought to pick her up and give her any love or attention when she was a baby.

When she came into the Wisconsin Guinea Pig Rescue's care, she was so scared that she would sit trembling in her igloo whenever anyone came near her cage. Her foster mom did her very best to help Bunny get more comfortable. In the meantime, the rescue sought a very special home for her (someone with a LOT of patience), but no one stepped forward.

After several months, the foster home took in another scared piggy and cautiously introduced her to Bunny. It took days for the introduction because Bunny was too frightened to leave her corner to meet the other pig. Eventually, though, they did meet and now they hide from the scary humans together. So Bunny has a friend.

After years of being up for adoption with no interest, Bunny is now a permanent part of our pig sanctuary. She is still scared of all strangers but will now tentatively allow her foster mom to touch her on the head for a little scratch every now and then and will even sometimes beg for treats. She will remain in our sanctuary for her lifetime.

Will you help us to provide for Bunny? Our goal is to raise enough money to support her for 10 months in the rescue (pellets, hay, daily fresh veggies and one vet "well-piggy" check-up). At $25 a month for upkeep and $35 for the vet visit, that puts our goal at $285. Bunny had no love in the beginning, so we want to make up for it in her lifetime. Although the Wisconsin Guinea Pig Rescue is a small rescue, we believe in seeing that ALL our rescues live a full life, even if they don't find a forever home.

MAY'S GUINEA PIG OF THE MONTH--Opie!

Orange County Cavy Haven!

Opie is an absolutely adorable guinea pig who has a rather stigmatized problem. But unfortunately stigmatized. It's a a really, really painful and dangerous problem. During May we're going to try and raise the money to treat Opie's severe impaction (and we're not talking teeth). Please read on for this adorable guy's story and how you can potentially help save his life.

We are trying to fundraise $246 for Opie's neuter: broken down as $68 for the neuter, $15 for pain meds, $100 for Isofluorane, $12 nursing care, $15 fluids, and $36 exam, as well as some painkillers and antibiotics to take home.

Orange County Cavy Haven had an 8 year old pig named Dusty who had recently lost a companion, but no one to pair him with. They contacted Wee Companions who had recently rescued Opie from an animal rescue in terrible condition. Opie arrived at the rescue, to the rescue! Unfortunately, the match was unsuccessful. The rescue thinks that poor Opie has never had a friend to live with, as although he can tolerate having other pigs nearby, when another pig is in his immediate presence he becomes incredibly fearful.

Opie didn't just arrive with emotional baggage. When Wee Companions transfered Opie to Cavy Haven they told them that his anal sac needed to be cleaned out every day. This can happen when a pig lives a lifetime of poor low-fiber diet and no exercise-the male's sac sags over time as muscle tone is lost. However Opie (at age 3 or 4) was too young for the severity of his condition.

While many pigs' conditions will improve with good diet and exercise, in some extreme cases the male has to be neutered, which removes the excess skin. It also prevents a dangerous condition from forming--unrelieved gas in a guinea pig can lead to gastric torsion, a situation that is almost always quick and fatal. Opie is already suffering from a repeated bacterial infection called enteritis, for which he has to take medication. His entire medication regimine (Metacam for pain, Reglan for G.I. motility, Charcoal for the gas, and Flagyl for the bacterial infection) costs $60 a month, but could be largely eliminated after Opie's neuter. Opie's neuter will also leave him much more comfortable, as he'll be able to pass his fecal pellets without aid.

Still, Opie's impaction issues aren't even the extent of it. His diarrhea kept returning, he was always bloated, and he strained when urinating. An x-ray at the vet revealed that Opie had two bladder stones! His neuter was put on the back burner for the stones to be surgically removed. Between the tests and the bladder stone surgery Opie's bills were $800 just in his first month at the rescue. He also suffers from arthritis (probably from being in such a small cage his whole life), and was initally overweight. Opie is a piggy who can't catch a break-aside from the enormous gain of being in the care of Orange County Cavy Haven!

Opie is just a sweetheart pig. He loves to have head petted, and will just stand there transfixed while you pet him. And he even tolerates his daily cleanings like a champ--he really gets along great with people if he's willing to put up with this! One of the largest benefits of the neuter would be that this poor pig, who has never had a guinea friend, would now be able to try living with a female. Opie could move from never having a friend to having a wife!

APRIL'S PIG OF THE MONTH-Misha!

Meet Misha

Small Angels!

Misha is a beautiful Pink Eyed White peruvian guinea pig with a very sad story. She came to the rescue from ae local animal rescue where her (at least) second owner had turned her in because she was moving. This owner found Misha at a yard sale, where she was discarded on a table of other unwanted items.

Since Sponsor a Guinea Pig has been doing so well with its fundraising, I thought we would aim high for this precious girl. Our fundraising goal for this month is $291, our most ambitious goal yet. This goal would pay for three months of Misha's monthly needs: a $20 vet visit, $40 in bedding, $15 in hay, $15 in veggies, and $7 for a tube of Destin each month so she doesn't get urine scald. If we don't meet our goal, any amount will help. And remember, Sponsor a Guinea Pig is Where a Dollar Makes a Difference!

It's a miracle Misha doesn't have a longer list of medical requirements. Misha had a severe urinary tract infection, cysts, and liver damage. Fortunately, the UTI cleared up with antibiotics, but those antibiotics caused her to stop eating and lose weight. Misha relied on the hand feeding of Small Angels fosters in order to recover. In addition, she has cysts on her side which are being observed and may need to be removed in the future. This will cause further financial strain to the rescue (and strain to Misha). The vet is delaying the procedure because of her poor health.

Misha's liver damage causes her to drink excessively, leading to excessive urination and incontinence. As a result, Misha's cage has to be cleaned every other day, leading to great expense for the rescue. Misha must be kept partly shaved and have an ointment applied daily to ensure she does not get urine scald.

Despite Misha's sad story, and poor health, she remains lively, active, and a joy to be around in the rescue-truly one of the pigs that remind rescuers why they began rescuing in the first place, and why this fundraising program exists. A sad announcement

I am devastated to write to you with some very sad news. Yetti has passed away because of heart issues. I know that with fundraising for special needs pigs this would always be a risk, but I am just so forlorn about this loss. I think any condolences sent to Wendi's way would be much welcome-she is the director of Thistle Cavies where Yetti received such amazing care. Here are some photos of Yetti when he was just six months old.

For those wondering, Josh is coping really well, and the rescue is going to pair him with a friend right away so he doesn't suffer from depression.

Heart issues are incredibly common in pigs-some basic signs of a heart pig are belly pigs, lap pigs, hooters, frequent URIs, crusty eyes, lethargy, and pigs that are easy to pick up. I would really encourage any pig owner to read the following link: GUINEA LYNX-HEART ISSUES: for information about how to treat a pig with potential heart issues.

I'm so sorry to Josh, the rescue, and to all readers of the site for the loss. I know we all grow really attached to these little guys. Meet Josh and Yetti

Thistle Cavies!

Josh and Yetti are just two of 15 special needs piggies at Thistle Cavies, and they are the best of buds. Josh is 6.5 years old and has been with the rescue for 3 and a half years. Yetti is a white rex who developed heart problems about 18 months ago, at the same as Josh, who had already suffered from a host of other medical problems.

We'd like to fundraise enough to pay for the expensive dental growth removal (£45.oo or $62.04), six weeks worth of medication: Fortekor (£22.50 or $31.02), Frusemide (£2.20 or $3.03), Rimadyl (£18.30 or $25.23) and Critical Care (£29.29 or $40.38), as well as two additional packages of Critical Care for the boys 2x(£29.29 or $40.38). This is for a total of £175.87 or ~$242.46, using an exchange rate of £1:$1.37864 as of 3/09/2009.

Prior to his heart issues, Josh required extensive surgery for a jawbone abscess shortly after his arrival. An infection had eaten away part of his jawbone and part of his jaw had to be removed, as well as one of his bottom incisors. Despite the most meticulous of care the rescue feared they might lose Josh, and for two months his recovery seemed unsure. But eventually he started putting on weight, and never looked back!

Now his surgery site needs to be maintained with regular procedures, but Josh is the definition of a patient piggy. He is a calm sweetheart who loves being syringefed, despite his mouth issues. He is also a super cuddle piggy who just snuggles into you as soon as he's picked up.

Yetti is his best friend, and the two simply can't be separated. Yetti's heart issues make him a candidate for Sponsor a Guinea Pig alone, but with the close bond they have it's doubtful Yetti would let Josh go on without him anyway! We hope to help ease the financial burden of this small, home based rescue by fundraising for part of their care, just as the medications will be easing the physical burden on these small boys' dear hearts.

FEBRUARY'S PIG OF THE MONTH-Maddie!

Meet Maddie

All Creatures Rescue and Sanctuary!

Maddie puts the special in special needs. She is an adorable, lovable guinea pig who has won hearts all over the internet. Not only is she just that cute, but she is a medically demanding type of pig known as a "lethal" pig. Maddie is a very characteristic lethal pig-she has small, deformed eyes (a condition called micropthalmia), she is blind, deaf, and has severe dental issues, including absent incisors, overgrowing teeth, and a malformed jaw.

Maddie requires monthly dental trims because of her special needs. These cost $70 ($50 for the trim, $20 for the anesthesia). We'd like to raise enough for two months of trims ($140), as well as pay for a three month supply of metacam ($30), a three month supply of critical care ($20), and a one month supply of veggies ($40)! In total we'd like to fundraise $230.

Maddie was surrendered to a Virginia shelter with no explanation by her owner. At the shelter Maddie was terrified, and ran around her cage crashing into the walls and her pigloo, screaming. She was completely panicked, and as her cage was on the shelter floor she was vulnerable to all of the action and vibrations of the building. She was rescued by an ACR&S volunteer, and Maddie became calmer immediately once in her car.

Maddie has received the best of care since being rescued-in the most literal sense of the word. Now Maddie is an incredibly sweet and friendly pig who enjoys being held and petted. She is the loudest wheeker of her herd, and brings a smile to faces as she begs shamelessly for treats. She tends to beg to the wall since she can't see where the veggies are. Although she has a heightened sense of smell, she is easily confused and often stands in the middle of her cage and wheeks as loud as she can until someone shows her where the food is-then she dives right in!

What is so sad about Maddie, and lethals, is that despite even the best of care they generally will have reduced lifespans because of their medical issues and genetic compositions. Unfortunately, lethals are a result are of accidental, ignorant, or dangerous breeding practices. Sadly many breeders continue these practices even knowing the medical disabilities they may inflict on a fraction of the litter.

Guinea pigs are social animals, and so always do better in pairs, but lethals like Maddie have difficulty communicating with other guinea pigs (and vice versa). This complicated her foster mom Andrea's search for a friend for her. When Andrea finally found a potential buddy (after a long quest) there was one problem-he was a boy! Luckily All Creatures Rescue and Sanctuary has a cavy savvy vet experienced with neuters. Now Maddie is spending this Valentine's Day safe in her forever home surrounded by the ones she loves.

Jackie (R) and Chester (L) are a newly bonded pair of special needs sweethearts. They both have expensive dental needs, and Jackie is going blind. Their needs are actually so expensive that we hope to raise enough money for meds for the pair for the month, and pay for the dental procedure for one of the piggies. Any donations received over our goal will go toward a second dental procedure.

Jackie has been in the rescue since she was one month old, when she came from a local animal control. When she was weaned from her mother the rescue noticed she wasn't gaining weight--and then realized she didn't have any top teeth! A year and a half later Jackie requires some careful dietary considerations, an expensive monthly dental procedure, and her beloved parsley. Jackie has recently had a hard time of it after losing her long time guinea mate, Claude. At the same time Jackie began going blind in her left eye, requiring medical attention. Meeting Chester helped her immensely.

Chester is three years old, and was owner-surrendered to the rescue four months ago. He also needs expensive monthly dental procedures, and has a painful infection in his mouth. The poor boy is on daily antibiotics and pain meds. This doesn't stop him from being a complete snuggler and cuddler with people, and cheering up Jackie again after her loss. They are a very practical, loving pair--if they were people they would have met at the orthadonist's office :) But instead the good folks at Texas Rustlers brought them together.

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue!

Peaches is a five year old sanctuary guinea pig with Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue. She is a very special girl who has been living the good life for over a year now, when she wasn't supposed to even live through her first night with the rescue. Each month Peaches's medical care costs the rescue $134.50-we are trying to raise enough for two months of her medical care! That's $269. This includes the office exam ($22.5o) an incisor trim ($15), her Meloxicam ($23), critical care ($28), Cosequin ($11.50), Benazapril ($11.50), and Metronidazole ($23).

When Peaches first arrived at the rescue, she was too weak to stand. She had an ulcer in her left eye, a fungal infection in her ears, bumblefoot, mites, teeth issues, and weighed less than a pound. Peaches had to be fed every hour on the hour throughout the night for days.

Now this miracle piggy, who has defied all expectations, is a grand diva of MGPR. She's become addicted to Critical Care (the food supplement that pulled her through those first nights) and eats that around the clock as well as regular meals! She's developed a healthy and unique wheek known as the TRUMPET, and all who meet her fall in love. She now weighs just under two pounds, but acts like she's the biggest of the herd.

Peaches has to visit the vet every month for a tooth trim, and gets a general check up. She has been diagnosed with heart issues, a fused spine due to malnutrition through her youth, severe arthritis in her knees, and her ear infection continues to occur. She is on five different medicines. Since the vet makes them fruit flavored she's addicted to her medicines too-if her caretakers are late she lets out the TRUMPET!

Sono is a beautiful one year old girl. Her plucky face belies the sad past the Critter Connection has pulled her through. The rescue is hoping to raise $240, to cover three months of her vet visits ($50 each month) and her nutritional supplement ($30 each month).

She was a stray guinea pig brought to animal control, where she was then picked up by the Critter Connection--and just in time! Sono was malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from vitamin C deficiency. An x-ray showed that metabolic changes were occuring in her spine, either from an injury or the severe malnourishment. She suffered from infections in three out of four of her footpads. These are classic signs of a guinea pig being housed on a wire floor. Sono was in such pain when she first arrived at the rescue that she couldn't walk.

Sono now has a daily medication schedule, as well as daily food and vitamin supplements. She also needs daily physical therapy. This only the start of her recovery. Despite all her woes, Sono remains a plucky pig, always happy for attention. She still has a nipping problem though, which lessens her chances for adoption-still a long way off regardless.

Meet Cinnamon and Salizar

Wee Companions!

Cinnamon and Salizar are a senior pair of sweethearts-at six years old, they have been through adoptions, returns, lost mates, and now they're going to spend the rest of their life at the rescue, living the good life. They met and fell in love in the rescue in their senior years.

SAGP hopes to raise $200 to fund two months of their care! See details at bottom.

When Salizar (on the left) was just a young boy in the rescue he lost his eye in an attempt to assert dominance. He still found a loving adopter, and was able to be paired with other males successfully. He had to be returned to the rescue when his owner moved to New Zealand.

Cinnamon and her mate were returned to the rescue when her owner was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her owner was devastated to return them. The rescue wrote, "Collecting them from their Mom and watching their farewells was incredibly hard. Sadly she passed away several weeks later and Cinnamon's beau also passed following surgery to remove a stone from his bladder." Around the same time Salizar's bonded mate, who was in poor health, passed away, and both pigs were lonely and depressed. The two were introduced and have now been bonded for years.

Cinnamon and Salizar have slowed over the years. Salizar suffers from arthritis and asthma, and needs his eye socket cleaned daily. He also suffers from impaction issues. Cinnamon is presently fighting an infection. The two pigs are still close friends who love each other deeply. "They snuggle together and still love to dine in style together..Salazar and Cinnamon are an 'old' couple, they do not run about their cage but rather paddle about it." Boots is a five year old Skinny pig who has been with OCCH since 2003. Five is ancient for a skinny pig, and is a real testament to the great care OCCH is providing him! He is a sweet, mellow boy who suffers from kidney disease and bladder sludge, but he is an angel at taking his daily meds. Boots is recently recovering from depression after losing his long time bonded mate, Winky. He loves tomatoes, and his fosterer says "if Bootsy won the lottery he would buy a tomato farm, some custom sweaters, and a closet full of fashionable cozies." Sponsor a Guinea Pig has to be a little bit more practical for Bootsy

The goal is to raise money for a six month supply of meds for Boots!

Boots takes Alternagel, which costs $7 a month, and Polycitra, which costs $30 dollars a month. That's $222. Should Boots fall ill, this can serve as an emergency medical fund.

Boots has had a hard time of it though. The photo of him up top is from when he first came to the rescue. This is his story: OCCH volunteers rescued Boots from a backyard breeder who was selling skinnies to Petco. The breeder had contacted OCCH to alert them that he had a herd of 40 skinny pigs, all diseased with ringworm--and because he didn't have the money to treat them, the breeder was going to destroy the herd.

The rescue notified Animal Control for aid, which in turn seized the guinea pigs and euthanized half of them before OCCH volunteers could arrive and intervene. OCCH volunteers also rescued multiple skinny pigs from a local vet which had tested the pigs for ringworm, then determined to euthanize them. OCCH volunteers hand fed unweaned babies covered in scabs. They wore gloves and aprons and dipped the guinea pigs in Lyme Dip and gave them Program mixed with Flax Oil to treat the ringworm.

After recovery, Boots had one unsuccessful adoption with his friend Arnold. The two pigs were returned without reason, thin, with long curling nails. "There were big chunks eaten out of their coroplast, as if they had been starving." After that experience, OCCH decided to never again adopt the skinnies out to people they didn't know. Skinnies have a terrible designer pet reputation that increases their demand, but decreases the supply of knowledgeable, prepared adopters. Boots was one of the skinnies who stayed with the rescue permanently. He is the last of the living skinnies from this rescue, and his medical conditions can take a toll on OCCH. But he is certainly well loved.

Boots now lives with guinea pigs Itchy and Piggy Boy, who just love Boots. All three pigs have lost their mates over time, so they really value their friends. Itchy and Piggy Boy cuddle with Boots, and have been buddy buddy from the start. Sometimes they can hog Boots' heat lamp, but it's always important to share with friends :) Besides, Boots can curl up in a fleece, or crawl up in a cozy, and think about how good life can be for an OCCH piggy!

AUGUST'S GUINEA PIG OF THE MONTH-Piglet!

Piglet is a special needs pig who has been with the rescue since May 4th. Piglet was surrendered to the rescue via a local vet, where her owners had left her to be euthanized. Piglet obviously had such a desire to live and the staff couldn't bear to put this cutie to sleep. So they contacted the ACR&S, knowing they could save her.

Piglet had no incisors but had made it to three years old, underweight, malnourished and neglected. Piglet suffered from severe scurvy, among other worrisome conditions. She had never had hay.

Between Piglet's plucky spirit and ACR&S's devoted care, Piglet is doing much better. She's had some very beneficial dental surgery, and is loving her regular diet of critical care (sort of like a power shake for guinea pigs). Read about her latest medical adventures here.
